Special requirements for vehicle functions sometimes do not allow installation of a direct mechanical connection from the drive motor to the wheels. Various forms of hybrid drive are being developed for such applications.

A tried and tested drive combination is a drive unit consisting of an internal combustion engine with generator and electric motors, which either drive into transmissions or are mounted on vehicle axles and drive the wheels.

This means that the drive unit (combustion engine with generator) can often be positioned at any installation location in the vehicle.
