In some cases, special requirements for vehicle functions do not allow the installation of a direct mechanical connection from the drive motor to the wheels. Various forms of hybrid drives are being developed for such applications.
A tried and tested drive combination is a drive unit consisting of a combustion engine with a generator and electric motors that either drive into the gearbox or are mounted on vehicle axles and drive the wheels.
This means that the power unit (combustion engine with generator) can often be positioned at any installation location in the vehicle.
